Lonely poems on valentine

Being a single poet means that you have to cope with requests to craft beautifully written love notes by your friends. Someone might just throw a random topic at you and expect some deep poem in five minutes. We are never really ready for any of these things, as i was not ready for this year’s Valentine’s day.

Valentine has always passed with little or no ceremony for me every year since I became aware of what it meant. Well, there was this one time I got a gift from a boy only to be insulted for not dating him a few days a lot (I still do not understand men).

This year is different. For one, I am older and my pals that had shared these single Valentine days with now have men in their lives (traitors!). Now, Valentine means something, it is a day to dread and struggle through. Of ignoring the pain I feel when someone uploads a photo of some luxurious gift they got. I have to smile and pretend I do not mind.

Things got progressively worse when in the evening i was asked to write a love poem for someone. As a poet, one thing i dread the most is being given a topic to write on. So imagine how I felt and there was the fact that i had to write about Love. Something i was not getting any of.

But poets have learnt to live lives they do not know and feel emotions that they have not experienced, today would be no exception for my bleeding poet heart. A few minutes after I sent the poem professing love for some girl I knew nothing about, i had an epiphany. I could enjoy Valentine’s Day and use my poems to make myself feel better.

I offered to write poems for anyone that wanted something special before the day ran out. Requests trickled in but the more I wrote, the better I felt. Saying I love you to people I did love through my poetry was a better use of my time and it showed me that I did not need someone to feel good on Valentine’s day.

P.S, if you got a very nicely written poem today, I might just have written it.
